But what does offset printing entail?
Offset printing offers many advantages. Here are the main ones:
- Extreme high definition and resolution given by the principle of oil-water repulsion.
- The rubber cylinder can maintain a high quality printing even on non perfectly smooth materials, making it an ideal system of printing on all types of paper or card.
- A reduced price for large print orders.
A planographic printing technique - where the graphic elements to print and the white spaces between are on the same level- following the principle of lithography. The machines used for offset printing ulitilise various cylinders (inking cylinders, wetting cylinders, matrix cylinders, rubber and pressure cylinders) and one of these, the matrix cylinder, is soaked with ink; In this way the inked image is transferred to the rubber cylinder, which by rotating against the material to be printed realises the actual printing. It is therefore not a direct print (a matrix sheet of paper), but indirect.
Then there are various types of machines: the cylindrical sheet machine is the most common and is capable of printing on different paper sizes, from 25x35 cm to 140×200.
